UCLA Dental Clinics Infection-Prevention Program

The UCLA Dental Clinics fully comply with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and professional standards regarding infection-control procedures in providing dental care to its patients. Our procedures exceed the precautions required by law. The following are the safety steps used on a daily basis in all of our dental clinics.

(1) Thorough Medical History – Each patient is asked to provide a complete medical history so that prior and current infections are considered during treatment planning. We refer patients with communicable/transmissible diseases to their physicians for treatment before dental care is initiated.

(2) Sterilization and Disinfection Procedures – All dental and surgical instruments used are sterilized by autoclave before and after each patient. Devices that cannot be autoclaved are sterilized by an approved alternative method of sterilization. All equipment and surfaces in the dental operatory are appropriately wrapped and disinfected before each appointment session.

(3) Disposable Supplies – The UCLA Dental Clinics purchase supplies from established and recognized manufacturers and distributors. These products always meet or exceed industry standards. We do not re-utilize or re-sterilize disposables.

(4) Provider Tuberculosis (TB) Status – Our dental students, residents, and other clinical trainees are tested for TB on an yearly basis and allowed to be in contact with patients only if cleared by qualified medical care providers.

(5) Hepatitis B Vaccinations – The UCLA Dental Clinics require that every dental student, resident, and other clinical trainees be immunized against hepatitis B. We also offer vaccination against hepatitis B to all our clinic staff members and faculty.

(6) Hand Washing – Dental students, residents, other trainees, faculty, and staff are required to wash her/his hands with soap and water before putting on gloves and working on a patient.

(7) Non-Latex Nitrile – Dental students, residents, other trainees, faculty, and staff are required to wear a new disposable, non-latex, nitrile gloves before working on any patient. Latex gloves are worn in a few clinic situations. If the provider of dental care steps away for any reason, a pair of over-gloves are worn over the existing gloves or the existing gloves are removed, discarded, and a new pair worn when the provider returns to the patient.

(8) Proper Clothing – Dental students, residents, other trainees, faculty, and staff are required to wear a fresh long sleeve disposable gown before each patient. These gowns are discarded at the end of each appointment.

(9) Face Masks – Masks covering the provider’s mouth and nose are worn by dental students, residents, other trainees, faculty, and staff in order to prevent cross-infection between the provider and the patient.

(10) Eye Protection - Dental students, residents, other trainees, faculty, and staff are required to wear eye-protection during patient care in order to protect themselves from potentially infectious agents present in the breathing area around a patient. The most common form of eye protection includes magnifying glasses, which are often coupled with a directional light source.
